PLANNING FOR REMEMBRANCE - THE APPLETON FAMILY
All loss of life in war is tragic but there is something particularly painful at seeing the same surname repeated on a war memorial with the thought that these may have been brothers. The Lymm Roll of Honour actually starts with such an instance. George and Sydney Appleton were the two youngest children of Thomas and Ann Appleton who ran Statham Post Office. They were just 21 and 19 respectively when they were killed two years apart in World War One.
Every year at the Heritage Centre at Remembrance time we share the story of one individual who lost their life. This year it was two - the Appleton brothers. Their story was also told at Lymm High School too as they marked Remembrance.
We are wondering if there might be descendants of the family still living locally. If so then assuming that we have their blessing to feature George and Sydney's story, they may also be able to add more to it and we would be very pleased to hear from them.
Thank you.
