The McIntyre Family Collection

Alexander McIntyre was born in Argyll, Scotland in 1846 and is the great great grandfather of the donor of these images, Liz Hamblyn.   He was the son of William (1814-1893) and Elizabeth McIsaac (1818-1878) and in 1872 married Catherine McMurdo (1851-1934) who was maid to Alexander's mother.  The young couple moved to Lymm where Alexander became a successful breeder of Shire horses.  Liz still has a number of his silver trophies, with one inscribed:
"Cheshire Repository Crewe
Champion Challenge Cup
The Gift of Frank Lloyd, Nuttall & Co
Won by Mr McIntye, Lymm
With his Roan Shire Gelding
Red Lynch Duke
Sold at the Record Price of 150gs
October 18th 1901"
Liz Hamblyn is descended from one of Alexander's sons - Robert (1879-1960).  According to the family story, Robert and his brother Alexander (who went to Canada, but returned later on)  left home around 1905. At this point Robert came to New Zealand, where two of Alexander's brothers were also living.  Liz also believes he knew his wife to be at this point  - a lady named  Dorothy Vaughan and has postcards Robert sent to her on his sea voyage to New Zealand.
Dorothy came to New Zealand and they were married in Auckland in 1907.  Their eldest son, Robert was born in 1910 and he was Liz's grand-father.  Family research suggests the descendants of Alexander and Catherine are herself, her two siblings and their children.
Another valuable nugget of Lymm's heritage now shared on the Archive for many generations to come. Thank you too Liz for contacting the Archive and being part of Lymm's story from New Zealand!
