Manchester Ship Canal Brick and Tile Works
The builders of the ship canal were lucky in finding good quality rock clay and sand in their excavations the clay, being particularly good for brickmaking - both common and engineering. The Brick and Tile Works using modern machinery, were producing 460,000 bricks in a week, in all a total of 70 million bricks which, if piled together would have produced 175,000 yd.³ of wall. They also used 220,000 yd.³ of masonry and 1,000,000 1/4 yd.³ of concrete.
(This information was obtained from the Journal of the Manchester Geographic Society written at the time)
Considering the amount of photographs taken documenting the building the ship Canal, it seems very strange that we have not been able to find one of the brick and tile works. Still we live in hope ...
