George Charnley Dewhurst

George Charnley Dewhurst was born in Leyland, Lancashire in 1808 and founded with his brother Richard, the firm of G. and R. Dewhurst, cotton agents and mill owners.  George married Harriet Bakewell and had two sons and three daughters.  Harriet Dewhurst died in 1859 aged 44 and George married Elizabeth Dundas, a lady from Edinburgh with the year.

George Charnley Dewhurst bought Beechwood in the late 1850s and within a short time, the Dewhursts had bought large amounts of land both in  Lymm and Oughtrington.  George Charnley later became a magistrate and served on the Local Board but in his late sixties, purchased a castle in Perthshire leaving the day to day running of his empire to his sons.

In Christmas 1893 he travelled to Lymm to spend the festive season at Beechwood but apparently never recovered from this journey.  George Charnley Dewhurst died on 14th February 1894 in Scotland with his funeral taking place in Lymm and was laid to rest in the family tomb in the churchyard of St. Mary's.
