Lymm Accident at Tip Head, 1893
Railway accident at Tip Head Lymm during the building of The Manchester Ship Canal.
Through a slight misunderstanding on the part of the engine driver or owing to his over zeal, a large portion of this train of tip wagons has been shot from the head of the spoil bank and over the stop beam chained to the rail ends. Such incidents were by no means rare and the wonder is that more men were not injured or killed outright in consequence.
The truck as a rule were dragged back again to the track by main force, a long chain being hooked to the engine and to each wagon in its turn.
