A Quiet Revolution: the Laufmaschine (June 2017)

The Laufmaschine or running machine, the ancestor of the modern bicycle was invented by Baron Von Drais who rode it from Nancy to Karlsruhe, a distance of 221 kilometres. This modern replica was ridden by owner Paul Adams of the Walton Park Cycle Museum, with  four fellow enthusiasts to recreate the event in 2017  - the 200th anniversary of the historic ride.

A specially minted silver 20 Euro coin celebrated the event which happened on 12th June 1817.
