House by Lymm Bridge
Here we see Captain Hugh Mellor and his wife posed outside the boatmen's cottages during wartime leave in May 1915. This is a hand coloured slide taken by Edward Mellor. His family owned an Oldham cotton spinning factory. Alfred Watkin (Hugh's father) and Edward Mellor almost certainly met through their mutual business interest in the cotton trade. (Edward Mellor travelled the world taking photographs and was at one time, President of the Manchester Geographic Society).
This photograph includes three buildings that are no longer standing; the boatman's cottage to the left, the four storey block beyond the bridge housed fustian workshops as well as a small grocer's, Hazelhursts and in the distance, the canal warehouse, demolished in the 1990's.
