Alan Williams
Alan Williams, Chair, Lymm Heritage Centre
ORIGINATOR and Co-Founder of the project, inspirer, supporter and Trustee.
Finding an affordable site in a village centre location had always been a major challenge in establishing Lymm's very own Heritage Centre! However, by February 2016, conversion of the former Royal British Legion Club on Legh Street received approval from Warrington Planning Committee. The plans had been submitted by the new owner, Mr Howard Platt, who also personally funded all refurbishments for this new and exciting project. Both Alan and his wife Su, have always personally acknowledged how hugely grateful they were to Howard and for his intervention, vision and generosity.
Resulting from this one offer, from just one member of the community, this enabled Alan to involve a group volunteers, to start building sustainable plans for the future. Initial contact, which had been established with the Heritage Lottery Fund, also allowed the group formulate its approach for major design funding and installation of core exhibitions on Trade, Transport and Traditions, An exhibition space that would tell the story of Lymm, a focal point for local history education for schools, whilst engaging other broad-range initiatives for the benefit of the wider community.
In 2018, Alan was awarded his British Empire Medal for his services to the community in Lymm. Alan has also been the Director of Lymm's Historic Transport Day and has authored numerous books on Lymm's past which can be purchased here :https://www.lymmheritageshop.co.uk/all-products
