Lymm Signal Box: interior
Lymm signal box looking eastwards showing the entrance in the centre and the manually operated signal levers on the right. The equipment above them was a simple Morse-code like communication system used to communicate with the next signal box in each direction to ensure that all boxes in that zone were aware of a train in their line control. A train coming from the east would initially be announced by a series of bell rings. The signalman had to acknowledge the rings by tapping on a rocker switch. A similar technique would be used to warn the next signal box that the train had passed.
